Dosimeters and Readers


A radiation dosimeter, sometimes called a “radiation badge”, is a device that monitors and stores personal dose information for ionizing radiation. Dosimetry is routinely applied to persons working with radioactive materials or radiation-producing machines who could receive a dose in excess of 500 Mill Rem (5 Milli Sieverts) in a year is required to wear dosimetry. Typically however, dosimetry is provided to people who could potentially be exposed to radiation during the course of performing their jobs. This would apply to first responders, fire fighters, hazmat technicians and law enforcement personnel.

Dosimetry is also used where radiation is unexpected such as in the aftermath of a radiological release incident where the public dose is measured and calculated from a variety of indicators such as ambient measurements of radiation and radioactive contamination.

Many dosimeters are now classified as self-reading and/or alarming devices. These instruments allow the user to select early warning and alarms for the amount of exposure that they receive and also to be warned of significantly higher than expected radiation levels. They also have digital read outs for instant access to the exposure monitoring data. These devices can also be linked electronically to a database or software program to maintain records and configure the devices.






The Rados RAD-60 Personal Alarm Dosimeter is designed specifically for stand-alone use. The RAD-60 stores and displays Dose/Dose Rate/Accumulated Dose and can be configured to use a Chirper as well. Primary functions of the instrument can be set by using the push button feature. However, the RAD-60R has data communication capability which allows full configuration of the instrument using RAD-50/60 Configuration Software and an ADR-1 reader. The RAD-60 can be switched to a system dosimeter as well converting it to a RAD-62.
