Radioisotope Identification and MCA's (RIID's, SPRD's and HPRD's)

The devices listed in this section are able to identify radioactive isotopes by analyzing the characteristic gamma emission spectra. Gamma-ray spectroscopy is the quantitative study of the energy spectra of gamma-ray sources, in the nuclear laboratory and nuclear process, and in geochemical, astrophysical and other radiation measurement contexts.

Hand-Held Radioisotope Identification Devices (RIID's) take this another step further and are designed to identify the isotopic composition of radioactive sources. A RIID is typically a small, handheld device that is generally easy to use and deploy. The devices are often multipurpose/multitask instruments able to detect different forms of radiation and perform a variety of functions; used to search, detect and identify radioactive materials.

Personal Radiation Detectors (PRD's) are small electronic devices that alert the wearer to the presence of radiation for the purpose of intercepting illicit radioactive materials. Some PRD's, known as Spectroscopic Personal Radiation Detectors (SPRD's), also measure the energy spectrum of the radiation to identify the radionuclide.

Human Portable Radiation Detectors (HPRD's) are comprised of several radiation detection components placed inside a backpack or similar enclosure, along with an optional external control device. This equipment detects the presence of radiological and nuclear material in a wide area around the operator; due to the larger detector element and power source, the detection and identification capability of these devices are typically much greater than a Spectroscopic Personal Radiation Detector (SPRD) or Radio-Isotope Identification Device (RIID)
