Recycling of re-usable resources conserves raw materials,
energy, and landfill space. Million of tons of iron and
steel scrap is recycled each year in the United States.
Steel making, foundry industries and virtually all
manufacturers that use recycled material rely on
radiation-free goods and components for their new
products. Recycled materials that are radioactively
contaminated threaten human health and the environment
while having a huge economic impact on the manufacturer.
This radioactivity can expose workers and ultimately be
incorporated into consumer products.

abandoned, lost, or stolen. Likewise, uncontrolled material
contaminated with natural or man-made isotopes from
industrial processes can also enter the recycling stream.
Two examples of this are pipe scale from oil and gas
drilling that contains naturally occurring radioactive
material and material improperly released from any nuclear
related industry that is contaminated with man-made radio
nuclides above regulated limits.
Since scrap metal
recycling is an increasingly international industry and as
the United States imports millions of tons of scrap metal,
semi finished metal, and metal products each year, it is
important to ensure that this metal is not contaminated with
radioactivity. There is always the possibility that more
highly contaminated materials could be exported to the
United States. LAURUS Systems is pleased to offer a full

this very serious environmental issue.
ISRI Safety and Environmental Council (lSEC) brings
industry leaders together twice a year to explore safety and
environmental issues, and to establish baselines for
acceptable performance. The council provides opportunities
to share ideas and to ask questions. It brings people
together to network and address challenges.
At the November, 2013 meeting in St. Louis, MO, Bonnie
Meilner, Regional Sales Manger for LAURUS Systems was
invited to make a presentation to industry professionals
addressing the challenges they face regarding radiation
monitoring, safety, and instrumentation when protecting both

The entry level RC1000
series of radiation detection systems have been designed for lower
density materials such as waste and light/bulky scrap metal. The
vehicle size and type will help determine the appropriate detector
panel size (34L or 69L). The RC1000 detection systems all utilize
RadComm’s high quality specially prepare Polyvinyl Toluene (PVT)
scintillators. The proprietary PVT design has been optimized to
allow maximum light output during scintillation events. The RC1000
is based on “Rate-Meter” technology. This technology requires a
minimal calibration on system startup.
The RC2000 Series
provides an extremely high degree of detection capability for a wide
range of radioactive elements commonly associated with scrap metal.
The RC2000 Series utilizes proven signal processing alarm algorithms
with a large volume of high grade specially prepared scintillation
material. The detection system then incorporates a dual detector
arrangement with high gain, low noise, photo multiplier tubes (PMT’s)
and infrared vehicle presence sensors that enable the system to
better focus on the specific background radiation levels as the
vehicle travels between the detector panels.
The RC4000 Series of radiation detection systems have
been specifically designed to detect radioactive materials
a moving vehicle loaded with scrap material. The system design
is modular, flexible and customizable, offering multiple detector
configurations to meet site specific applications. The RC4000
incorporates only the highest quality of components and
software/hardware technology available today.
The detector assemblies provide an extremely high
degree of detection capability for a wide range of radioactive
elements commonly associated with scrap metal. The detectors utilize
large plastic scintillation panels that are sensitive to Ionizing

Conveyor Radiation Detection System consists of two main
