Excerpt - The Rapiscan/TSA package portal monitor, model XRT-260, is a highly reliable system for radiometric protection of special nuclear material (SNM). The package monitor system consists of two pillars which contain the sub-system modules. The pillars are mounted on either side of the conveyor belt. The pillars use lead shielding on the rear and sides of the detectors to reduce the background radiation and increase the ability of the system to detect SNM passing between the pillars.

With the exception of the alpha source, the small quantity of radioactive material is sealed in the plastic with epoxy to prevent leakage and contamination. The transmission window is sufficiently thin to transmit both beta and gamma emissions without undue absorption.

Excerpt - The RO-20 AA is a portable air ionization chamber instrument, used to detect beta, gamma, and x-radiation, with five linear ranges of operation to measure exposure from background to 50 R/h full scale.The detector is fully temperature compensated, eliminating any need for temperature correction. Each instrument is factory calibrated to gamma radiation. A single rotary switch turns the instrument off, checks the batteries, checks the zero setting, and selects the range of operation. An ergonomically located switch illuminates the meter. Internal switching of ranges is accomplished with reed relays, eliminating the mechanical swing arms typically used with portable ion chamber survey instruments.
