Personal Radiation Detectors, PRD’s and SPRD's
LAURUS Systems offers many types of radiation detection devices. There is no single device that can detect and monitor all kinds of radiation and there is no one instrument that can be used in all situations. One of the more versatile instruments available however is the Personal Radiation Detector, or PRD.
A Personal Radiation Detector (PRD) is designed to detect, and alert a minimally trained wearer to the presence of, small increases in the levels of ionizing radiation. The wearer should be able to use the PRD effectively while performing other tasks. The PRD should not require the attention of the wearer until it alarms. It enables the user to locate the source of the radiation and maintain a safe distance with little or no intrusion or disruption of civilian activities.
While a PRD is not an accurate radiation dosimeter, there are models that will calculate and maintain exposure over time. It is also not typically considered to be a Radio Isotope Identification Device (RIID), but there are a number of small devices that are considered Spectroscopic PRD’s. PRD’s small size and weight considerations are generally what limit functionality when compared to devices that employ larger detectors.
