Personal Radiation Detectors, PRD’s and SPRD's
LAURUS Systems offers many types of radiation detection devices. There is no single device that can detect and monitor all kinds of radiation and there is no one instrument that can be used in all situations. One of the more versatile instruments available however is the Personal Radiation Detector, or PRD.
A Personal Radiation Detector (PRD) is designed to detect, and alert a minimally trained wearer to the presence of, small increases in the levels of ionizing radiation. The wearer should be able to use the PRD effectively while performing other tasks. The PRD should not require the attention of the wearer until it alarms. It enables the user to locate the source of the radiation and maintain a safe distance with little or no intrusion or disruption of civilian activities.
While a PRD is not an accurate radiation dosimeter, there are models that will calculate and maintain exposure over time. It is also not typically considered to be a Radio Isotope Identification Device (RIID), but there are a number of small devices that are considered Spectroscopic PRD’s. PRD’s small size and weight considerations are generally what limit functionality when compared to devices that employ larger detectors.
Excerpt - A discreet yet robust PRD designed for law enforcement, fire rescue, and other emergency responders to detect and interdict nuclear and radioactive materials. It also provides dose measurement and alarming capabilities for event response. Excerpt - The Mini Rad-D is a rugged, all-weather radiation detector that’s small enough to wear on a belt yet powerful enough to quickly locate low- level radioactive sources. Even among crowds of thousands of people or warehouses with thousands of packages. Designed to discreetly monitor any environment without intrusion or disruption of civilian activities, the Mini Rad-D can be set to notify the user by vibration or audible alarm whenever radiation exceeds natural background levels. The Mini Rad-D is as easy to use as a flashlight. And requires just about as much training. It has a single switch that puts it into audible alarm mode, vibrate alarm mode, or turns it off.More Information

Thermo Scientific offers a comprehensive range of advanced instruments for radiation detection, dose rate and contamination measurements.More Information
Excerpt - The so-called “orphan source” phenomena is a serious global problem; sources showing up unexpectedly in scrap yards, border crossings, or numerous other public locations are a significant potential threat. The RadEye represents a high-performance measuring device for anyone responsible for finding radiation sources; personnel monitoring waste stream or specific areas within a facility, interdiction teams (border guards, customs agents, special forces or counter terrorism teams) or first responders (emergency services and law enforcement).More Information
Excerpt - The RadEye SPRD provides first responders and law enforcement teams like border guards or special forces with high performance detection and radionuclide analysis for any scenario. Metal recyclers and producers that need to detect, locate and identify orphan radionuclides in their incoming scrap material can now add an additional level of security, using the RadEye SPRD.More Information
Excerpt - The RadEye SPRD-ER Personal Radiation Detector provides significant detector sensitivity for search and find, combined with accurate high dose rate radiation measurement, the SPRD-ER is a suitable Geiger counter for all users and may be the only radiation detector you need. The SPRD-ER radiation detector identifies the nature of the discovered material in a manner configurable for your operation or user skills.More Information
Excerpt - The RadEye SPRD-GN uses a sophisticated spectroscopic Cs2LiYCl6:Ce detector that is both gamma and neutron sensitive to achieve its pager size. The performance of this can only be matched by much larger instruments that incorporate one detector for gamma radiation and a separate He-3 proportional counter tube for neutron detection.More Information

The Mini Rad-D is a powerful, sensitive and rugged all-weather radiation detector that’s small enough to wear on a belt. Designed to discreetly monitor any environment without intrusion or disruption of civilian activities, the Mini Rad-D can be set to notify the user by vibration or audible alarm whenever radiation exceeds natural background levels.More Information
Excerpt - The RadEye GN and GN+ Gamma Neutron Pagers combines the superior performance of the thermo Scientific RadEye PRD Gamma Pager with a very high neutron sensitivity that exceeds the time-to-alarm requirements of ANSI 42.32 and IEC 62401. Furthermore the Thermo Scientific RadEye GN Series show a significantly enhanced performance of the built-in NBR circuitry (NBR = Natural Background Rejection). It is now even more capable of differentiating artificial sources from NORM than previous RadEye™ PRDs, due to the resolution and stability of the scintillator material.More Information
Excerpt - The PDS-100G is a new generation of gamma and gamma/neutron radiation detectors. These sensitive pocket-sized devices are designed to detect, locate and quantify any radioactive materials as Special Nuclear Materials or as Radiological Dispersal Devices (RDD's), in a very short time. The PDS-100G and GN feature the capability to transmit the measurement and the spectrum on request. They have been designed specially for First Responders, Law Enforcement, Customs Inspectors and for Personnel and Site Security in critical infrastructures.More Information
