Radiation Portal Monitors and Radiation Area Monitors

Radiation Portal Monitors and Radiation Area Monitors

Radiation portal monitors (RPMs) and radiation area monitors are passive radiation detection devices.  They are used for the screening of individuals, vehicles, cargo or general areas for detection of radioactive materials or radiation contamination.  Fear of terrorist attacks with radiological weapons spurred RPM deployment for cargo scanning since 9/11.

Originally developed for screening individuals and vehicles at secure facilities such as weapons laboratories, radiation portals are now commonly used at scrap metal operations, foundries, land fills and recycling facilities to detect radiation sources incoming material to avoid radioactive sources illegally disposed in this way. RPMs are also deployed at civilian and military nuclear facilities to prevent theft of radiological materials.

The monitors are designed to detect traces of radiation emitted from an object passing through it.  Most times, gamma radiation is detected.  In some cases the monitors are complemented by neutron detection when sensitivity for special nuclear material is desired.

As part of the effort to thwart nuclear smuggling after the breakup of the Soviet Union, the US Department of Energy deployed many RPMs worldwide as part of the Second Line of Defense Program in the late 1990s. After the attack of 9/11, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) started the Radiation Portal Monitor Program (RPMP) to deploy RPMs around all US borders.

rad-D™

rad-D™

Excerpt - The Rad-D is a fixed-position radiation detector that is used to monitor doorways, driveways, or loading docks. It can inspect packages or luggage on conveyor belts; and it can be integrated with an X-ray machine or a metal detector to increase the kinds of dangers detected. The Rad-D can also be easily connected to an existing security system – to add radiation to the other types of alarms. The Rad-D is small. It can be attached to walls, light poles, convey-or belts, or X-ray machines. And because it is small, it doesn’t affect the how of vehicles or pedestrians under inspection. Other, similar devices need large, fixed areas and concrete footings to mount their systems and require traffic (vehicles or people) to be forced through a fixed inspection corridor

The Cricket is the only system of its kind in the world and has been proven to withstand the harsh environment of a scrap handling operation - regardless of the material being handled.

SPIR-Ident

SPIR-Ident

Excerpt - The SPIR–Ident Vehicle Portal is the most advanced detector of the SPIR family, and a new concept for site or critical infrastructure protection against radiological threats, such intrusion of special nuclear materials (SNM) or radiological dispersion devices (RDD). The SPIR-Ident vehicle portal is intended for secondary screening as a compliment to plastic scintillation-based detection portals. The SPIR-Ident provides a cost and performance effective solution and alternative to dynamic «ASP’s» for vehicles and containers.

rad-D™

GammaTRACER Spider

Excerpt - The autonomous GammaTRACER Spider gamma probe is specially designed to cover the needs of first responders in an emergency scenario. Based on the proven GammaTRACER design, the probe provides reliable measurement of the gamma dose rate and wireless data transmission to the crisis center by using SkyLINK/ShortLINK radio or Iridium satellite modem. The compact design and innovative self-erecting enclosure facilitate deployment and minimize time, particularly important for emergency use and roll-out in contaminated area.

STRIDE 200

STRIDE 200

Excerpt - The STRIDE Series 200 detection units have been designed primarily for fixed wired installations. The cylinder shaped housing is made of aluminum and is both dust and moisture proof. The size of the housing depends on the size of the NaI scintillation detector chosen and the presence of an optional He3 neutron detector with moderator. These units can be mounted on walls, above doorways, behind reception desks, behind passport control counters, above luggage or parcel conveyer belts, and much more.

EDAC 21 Criticality Accident Alarm System (CAAS)

Excerpt - Criticality Accident Alarm Systems (CAAS) are required in nuclear facilities where an accidental criticality excursion could result from operational processes. In general, most production-oriented nuclear fuel cycle facilities require a CAAS system because the fissile material is managed in quantities that exceed critically-safe mass limits.
